Market Drayton Cricket Club is part of the Market Drayton Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC), which is located close to Drayton Meadows on Blandford Way. The club has fitness, squash and boxing facilities, as well as being home to the local hockey club.

The CASC is a not-for-profit organisation and is run for and by its members, with cricket having been played on the ground at Betton Road for close to 130 years. The ground is also protected by Fields in Trust.

Michael Bircher, Secretary at Market Drayton Cricket Club, said: “Minimal cricket was played during the 2020 season due to the pandemic, which meant we lost virtually a year’s income.

“The donation from David Wilson Homes will be used towards pitch preparation for next year’s season, as well as refreshing some of our equipment.”

Swansea University examined the impact the pandemic had on the physical activity, mental health and wellbeing of children as their play activities continued to be disrupted. Findings included an increasing concern that sedentary lifestyles triggered by COVID-19 may become entrenched as children get out of the habit of being physically active.

Michael continued: “In 2022, we are planning to restart our junior cricket league and the funds will be a great help towards the cost of materials required to prepare the pitch for the teams to train and play.”

The £500 donation was made by the homebuilder as part of its outreach into the local communities.

Michael added: “David Wilson Homes’ Community Fund scheme is great. It’s helping local facilities where the homes are being built and brings them to the attention of new residents at their developments.”

Dominic Harman, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Mercia, said: “As one of the UK’s leading developers, it is really important that we support local organisations in our surrounding area.

“We wish Market Drayton Cricket Club all the best in its preparations for next year’s season, and hope the club continues to leave a positive impact in the lives of the children and adults it works with.”
