Rookie sports car racer Elliott Robinson stunned fellow competitors at a national competition after setting the fastest lap time – a blistering 6.8 seconds.
The 47-year-old, who normally runs oven cleaning service Ovenu Solihull, earned the ‘fastest on the track’ title following a series of fiercely contested seven lap races.
However, before anyone lines him up for Silverstone, his speedy feat was part of a high-stakes Scalextric showdown at the Ovenu franchise’s annual general meeting held at Abbey Golf & Spa Hotel, Redditch
Elliott, who lives nearby, saw off tough competition from almost 100 fellow franchisees gathering from across the UK – including company founder and managing director, Rik Hellewell, who finished a close second.
He said: “I suppose I had home advantage, but I’m definitely more used to restoring the shine to ovens than racing cars – even miniature ones on a plastic track. Setting a 6.8-second lap was a real change of pace for me, especially given I’m normally behind the wheel of a van!”
Magnanimous in defeat, Rik Hellewell is already planning his comeback. “Elliott’s lap time was genuinely rapid,” he added. “I’ll definitely be sneaking in some practice before next year’s AGM!”
The Scalextric Grand Prix was one of several competitions held during the two-day AGM, which combined socialising with business updates and networking sessions.
Elliott launched Ovenu Solihull in 2007, fulfilling a long-held ambition to become his own boss after previously working in a warehouse. Since then, he’s created a thriving business with a loyal client base and estimates to have restored the sparkle to more than 10,000 ovens.
He covers the B90 B91 B92 B93 B37 and B40 postcodes, including Solihull Olton, Dickens Heath, Shirley, Dorridge, Hillfields, Tidbury Green, Chelmsley Wood, Elmdon, Meriden, Balsall Common and surrounding areas.
The Ovenu process involves dismantling key components such as the door, interior panels, fan, and shelves and placing them in design-registered tank equipment, which uses safe, non-caustic and biodegradable products to clean the parts, leaving the oven in near showroom condition. In addition to conventional ovens, it also covers hobs, extractor hoods, microwaves, along with range cookers and ovens.
